Cancer World Newsletter - Andreas Engert: Learning from Hodgkin’s PDF Print E-mail
How to cure your patient with minimal damage to their long-term health has been the big
challenge in Hodgkin lymphoma since the 1970s, when Andreas Engert was a young boy,
watching his father go through treatment at the hands of Mr Hodgkin himself, Volker Diehl.
Engert went on to develop a career in this disease, taking over from Diehl as chair of the
German Hodgkin Study Group in 2007. In this Cover Story he talks about his high hopes
that targeted biologicals may finally provide an alternative to the current toxic regimens on
offer. But as he rightly cautions, as more and more innovative drugs are coming into use,
and patients in many cancers are living longer, Hodgkin’s has a lot to teach about the need
to anticipate long-term effects, and to inform and support patients.

What do you think?

  • Does the new generation of targeted therapies spell the end of the serious long-term
side-effects that are associated with highly toxic multidrug chemotherapy regimens?
  • Should we be more cautious about possible long-term effects of the new generation of
    treatments?

World Diabetes Day 2012, European Institute of Women's Health Raising Awareness about Diabetes in Women PDF Print E-mail
In support of World Diabetes Day on 14 November, the European Institute of Women's Health - an EPAAC_JA Collaborating Partner, wishes to raise awareness about diabetes in women.

Diabetes is on the increase not only in Europe but worldwide. Diabetes is also increasing in women. Women have a special role in looking after their own health and that of their children and family members. The first step we can all take is switch to a healthy diet and take more exercise. This will help in the fight against obesity. Diabetes during pregnancy poses a risk to mother and child health.

Cancer World Newsletter - Editorial: Penalised for having cancer PDF Print E-mail
Many cancer patients are being tipped into poverty as a direct result of their illness, which
adds stress and misery to an already very difficult situation. In this editorial, Cancer World
looks at the many ways that a having cancer can hit people’s living standards. It calls for
more information and awareness about the financial problems patients are facing, and calls
for a determined EU-level policy initiative to end this economic penalisation of cancer patients.

What do you think?

  • Do any of your patients struggle to cope with the economic consequences of having
    cancer?
  • Is legislation, or better enforcement of legislation, needed to protect their rights?
  • Are patients being asked to shoulder too many financial burdens – co-payments,
transport, supportive care, increased heating bills?
  • Do you make sure your patients know where to go to get help and advice?

Cancer World Newsletter - How bad news can be good news for cancer services PDF Print E-mail
Doctors are often reluctant to voice concerns in public about standards of cancer care, for
fear of worrying patients. But we know that many patients are being let down by wide variations
in the quality of cancer services from one hospital to the next, and between different regions
and countries. This Spotlight article reports on discussion at a journalists training course
conducted by ESO in conjunction with the European Broadcasting Union, about how critical
journalism can help pull up standards of care.

What do you think?

  • Does media criticism of the quality of cancer services risk demoralising patients?
  • Is public awareness of shortcomings in care essential to drive improvements?
  • Should the medical profession be more open about disparities in cancer outcomes?
